99-year-old Frits Philips and PSV manager Guus Hiddink have given the starting signal for the construction of a new accommodation for the PSV Youth Academy and the PSV Amateur department at De Herdgang training ground on Friday afternoon. After PSV Chairman Westerhof had spoken a few words, Frits Philips also made a short speech outside. "It’s great fun for me as an old hand to be asked to put in a few words", said the former industrialist and faithful PSV-supporter, by which he had ‘em all laughing immediately. "I hope that many young athletes will develop themselves here. Ordinary life is like practicing a sport: the better you learn how to be a good loser and the better you learn how to score goals, the better your life will be. I wish you the best of luck. Thank you very much indeed."Together with Guus Hiddink, Mr Philips pushed a button, after which a picture of the construction of the new buildings was shown. A shovel dug the first layers of hot-rolled asphalt. The whole party then went inside to have a drink. Mr Philips talked to some PSV junior players on his way to the restaurant. He was anxious to talk to a striker in order to wish him a lot of goals. 'Mister Frits' had a cup of tea at the table, with, among other people, architect Toon van Aken and the former Manager Match Affairs, Peter Westelaken. 'Mister Frits' was escorted during his visit by his son Frits Philips Jr. The son of Mr Philip said his father, nearly one hundred years of age, was delighted to be still a member of the PSV community. "He feels for the club a lot. He has a very bad time when PSV lose, but after a while he can forget all about it. He lives by the day, but his love for PSV is forever. He is particularly fond of players that are inventive and adventurous. That’s why he was a great fan of Arjen Robben, but he also liked Romario, in spite of his capricious nature." The son of Mr Philips added that the family has been informed about the many plans to celebrate the 100th birthday of Frits Philips and they appreciate the feelings of warmth, respect and kindness very much. PSV officials, youth players, journalists and interested inhabitants of Eindhoven thoroughly enjoyed the performance of the 99-year-old hale and hearty man. A toast was proposed to the construction of the new accommodation for the PSV Youth Academy and the PSV Amateur department. After having been the centre of interest for over an hour, 'Mister Frits' went home again.
