'PSV have to learn from Tuesday's Champions league defeat against Atlético Madrid and attempt to return winning ways when they take on AZ in Alkmaar on Saturday night', said head coach Huub Stevens during his weekly press briefing at PSV's De Herdgang training complex on Friday afternoon. 'We have been taught a lesson in quality football and it's up to us to prove we'll benefit from it', explained Stevens.
'Recovered from the defeat'
'However, I would rather lose 3-0 once than suffer a 1-0 defeat three times. We were punished at inconvenient moments for defensive errors. But that's international football: Atlético were waiting for us to make mistakes and struck at exactly the right moments', repeated Stevens the statements he made at Tuesday post-match press conference. 'We have recovered from the defeat and we hope to bounce back to winning ways in the Dutch league. Yet we will always face fierce resistance away at AZ, even when we don't play a mid-week game', said Stevens who saw all his players come through the Atlético Madrid tie unscathed.
'Believe in our own qualities'
'We don't expect any presents in Alkmaar, in particular as AZ did not get off to a great start. But their manager Louis van Gaal knows only two well that there have been just two rounds of matches. I think AZ have a quality squad. We are determined to take it one game at a time. We believe in our own qualities. We maintain our concentration and keep playing our own game.' AZ-PSV kicks off at the DSB Stadium in Alkmaar at 20:45.
