PSV head coach Huub Stevens felt at the post-match press conference that his team had only themselves to blame for slipping to a 1-0 defeat against AZ in Alkmaar on Saturday night. 'I am disappointed to see my side come away with nothing. We lacked initiatives going forward and AZ thoroughly deserved their victory. We let ourselves down.'
'Lacked initiatives going forward'
'We put in a below par performance and let ourselves down, which should never have happened', admitted Huub Stevens at the post-match press conference . 'I have said before that it would be hard to get a result in Alkmaar and we can't blame the mid-week fixture for tonight's defeat. We controlled the game in the first half but did not seize initiatives until after thirty minutes. We had some chances to open the scoring in the first half, but after the break we lacked initiatives going forward and, all in all, AZ thoroughly deserved their victory', concluded Stevens.
'Fully deserved to win'
His AZ colleague Louis van Gaal, who led his side to their first victory of the campaign, agreed with Stevens' analysis. 'I think we deserved victory because of our second-half display. We enjoyed the bulk of possession and passed the ball around well. We were lucky to score a late winner, but I feel we fully deserved to win.'
