PSV recorded a 1-0 win over rock-bottom side FC Volendam on Saturday night. The home side dominated the entire match but squandered a host of chances and could only manage one goal. Wuytens headed home a cross from Bakkal fifteen minutes from time to secure a narrow victory for PSV.
First-half chances
Wuytens returned to the starting line-up to replace Afellay who was ruled out with a toe injury. Lazovic led the attack along with Dzsudzsák and Koevermans. PSV head coach Huub Stevens handed a first start to full right back Kromkamp, while Salcido again occupied the left-back position. PSV outclassed the visitors at the Philips Stadium but failed to turn their dominance into goals. Koevermans had a chance to head home the opening goal after only two minutes and only five minutes were on the clock when PSV had already won seven corners. Lazovic, Marcellis, and Lazovic again, Koevermans and Dzsudzsák, who rattled the bar, all came close to scoring. Much to the frustration of the home crowd, PSV lacked sharpness and Volendam keeper Verhoeven also denied the hosts, pulling off a string of fine saves.
Stijn Wuytens goal
The second half continued in the same vein. FC Volendam, predictably, played eleven players behind the ball, while PSV worked hard in a desperate bid to slice open the Volendam defence. PSV continued to push for a goal, but they started their first well-worked move of the second half only in the 60th minute, when Méndez had an effort on target. Amrabat had been brought on at half time for Lazovic and Nijland left the bench after 63 minutes to replace Dzsudzsák. PSV surged forward at will throughout the second period and forced at least fifteen corners, but still failed to break the deadlock. At the other end, Lopez had a chance but PSV keeper Isaksson thwarted him. With 21 minutes remaining, Stevens made his third substitution, when Bakkal came on for Méndez. It almost immediately paid off, as the substitute delivered a perfect cross and Wuytens, left completely unmarked, headed home from close range. It was the second time that the young Belgian found the net this week after he had scored a goal in PSV's 3-0 cup win over Young PSV on Tuesday.
A win is the only thing that matters
FC Volendam, who had come to Eindhoven to defend, could not trouble PSV in the remaining fifteen minutes, while the home side wasted chances to extend their lead. Koevermans was not in great shape, while his fellow forwards could not break down the orange Volendam wall either. However, PSV have bagged all three points and at the end of the day, a win is the only thing that matters, but the 33,000 home crowd, who had hoped their team would run riot, were certainly not treated to a particularly entertaining game. PSV will now focus on Wednesday's Champions League clash at Liverpool. The squad will fly to Great Britain on Tuesday.
