NAC Breda were rewarded for their spirited performance against PSV in Breda on Saturday night, as they inflicted a 2-1 defeat on the Dutch champions. Huub Stevens' team put in a far from convincing display as the players frequently lost possession of the ball. PSV were outclassed and Ibrahim Afellay scored a consolation goal deep into stoppage time.
Simons own goal
PSV coach Huub Stevens did not make any changes from the side that had beaten De Graafschap 3-0 two weeks ago. NAC Breda included the former PSV players Fehér, Ten Rouwelaar and Van der Leegte in their starting line-up. The latter was booked after only four minutes for a wild challenge on Kromkamp. Two minutes later, the referee showed the yellow card to Kromkamp himself. Lazovic had the first shot on goal for PSV, who were already forced to defend in the initial stages. They frequently lost possession of the ball as NAC swept forward. After 14 minutes, the home fans at the Rat Verlegh Stadion had reason to celebrate, when an inswinging free kick was headed on by Penders. The ball took a deflection of Simons before it flew past keeper Isaksson into the net; 1-0. Huub Stevens took off Kromkamp and brought on Maza, who partnered countryman Salcido in the centre of defence, while Marcellis took up the right back position, as he had done with the Dutch team this week. PSV were constantly robbed and failed to create any meaningful chances. The Eindhoven outfit did not threaten until the half hour mark when Amrabat slipped the ball to Afellay and collected a return pass, but he sent his effort wide. Afellay unleashed another shot on the stroke of half time, but, again, he curled the ball round the wrong side of the post. At the other end, NAC had a great opportunity to double their lead, but Kwakman's header went wide.
Amoah goal
PSV could not make amends after the break. Bakkal replaced Pieters, who had received a yellow card. Simons took up the centre back position and Salcido played at left back. Stevens made his final substitution with 25 minutes remaining, when Koevermans came off the bench to replace a disappointing Dzsudzsák. PSV improved but NAC believed they could pull off an upset and brought on some defensive-minded players. A few minutes from time, Bakkal had a chance to salvage one point for PSV, but he had his shot blocked by Penders. And NAC wrapped up the points from the resulting counter attack. Amoah cleverly rounded Maza, creating some space before unleashing a venomous strike which crashed into the back of the net. The NAC fans started celebrations and they were fully entitled to do so. Afellay pulled one back in the third minute of injury time but it was too little too late. PSV have little time left to lick their wounds, as they play host to Olympique Marseille on Wednesday and Roda JC on Saturday.
