On the first few days of the new year, PSV.nl presents a review of 2008. Today this page will take you through the month of May. PSV played a friendly in Greece. The transfer window brought a flurry of activity. PSV completed the signing of Mexican international Maza and the atmosphere at De Herdgang training centre was relaxed.
Friendly in Greece
As PSV as ruling champions were not involved in the playoffs and had been eliminated both from the KNVB Cup and the UEFA Cup, they availed themselves of the opportunity to play a friendly against PAOK Saloniki in Greece. Youngster Género Zeefuik opened the scoring for PSV, but the Greeks came from a goal down to claim a 2-1 victory. Keeper Cássio Ramos was sent off for a professional foul fifteen minutes from time.
Transfer window
The transfer window brought a flurry of activity in the month of May as PSV attempted to strengthen their squad. PSV completed the signing of 26-year-old Mexican international Francisco Javier Rodríguez Pinedo, or rather Maza, from the Mexican club Chicas on 10 May. A few days later it was announced that PSV would part company with their technical manager Stan Valckx. The Nilis era may experience a revival at PSV as 17-year-old Arne, son of club icon Luc Nilis, signed a three-year deal. Otman Bakkal pledged his future to PSV by extending his contract, due to expire in mid-2010, by another two years.
Statement
PSV's Board of Supervisory Directors made a statement on 1 May, presenting their views on current affairs concerning the club. The board expressed their full support for the important decisions made by the management, but also admitted that unrest and vagueness due to a number of changes at head coach level did not contribute to a healthy work climate. The board promised to pay extra attention to improve internal communication to prevent misunderstandings from arising. Looking back at the 2007/08 season, PSV are proud to have won the league title for the fourth year running and to have reached the UEFA Cup quarter finals. PSV also released its financial results: the club booked a net profit for the third year in a row.
Miscellaneous
At the age of 75, former PSV coach Sir Bobby Robson, who has been diagnosed with cancer five times in the last 15 years, has set himself a new and very challenging goal: the Sir Bobby Robson foundation will raise money and focus on the early detection and treatment of cancer and the clinical trials of new drugs that will eventually beat it. On 22 May, the players concluded the final training session of the season with a game of tennis before enjoying a well deserved holiday. PSV Under-19 got off to a poor start to the annual Otten Cup tournament, suffering 1-0 defeat in their opening game against FC Dynamo Moscow. They were to finish seventh in the 62nd edition of the international youth tournament.
