Today this page will take you through the month of August when PSV played a number of international pre-season friendlies, won their first trophy of the season and got their 2008/09 campaign off to a flying start, thrashing FC Utrecht 5-1 at the Stadium Galgenwaard. Danny Koevermans became a father for the second time.
International pre-season friendlies
PSV made a short trip to Portugal in their third week of pre-season training. They recorded a 1-1 draw with Sporting Lisbon on 2 August. The hosts opened the scoring but Stijn Wuytens came to PSV's rescue when he leveled things with a late strike. Stijn was one of the newcomers in the squad after he had been promoted from the reserves. The squad then left for England where they played two international pre-season warm-up friendlies. They shared honours with Newcastle United (2-2) and also drew with Everton (1-1). PSV did not enjoy victory a few days later either, when they drew 1-1 with Real Mallorca. In the end, PSV beat their Spanish opponents in a penalty shoot-out to win the Trofeo Ciudad de Palma. A young PSV side ended the pre-season campaign in fine style with a comprehensive 4-0 victory over amateurs De Treffers in Groesbeek on 19 August. Danny Koevermans and his strike partner Danko Lazovic bagged a double each.
PSV won Johan Cruijff Shield
PSV lifted their first piece of silverware of the new season, following a 2-0 Super Cup win over Feyenoord at the Amsterdam Arena on 23 August. Danko Lazovic and Dirk Marcellis scored goals after the break to wrap up a deserved and impressive 2-0 victory in the official opening game of the 2008/09 season. The next day PSV completed the signing of FC Groningen forward Stef Nijland. The 20-year-old agreed a five-year deal at the Philips Stadium.
Flying start
Following the Johan Cruijff Shield victory, PSV got off to a flying league start as well, thrashing FC Utrecht 5-1 in emphatic style on the opening day of the season at the Stadium Galgenwaard. Ibrahim Afellay put in a man-of-the-match display for the defending champions, scoring a double. The midfielder's second goal was an absolute peach. Danny Koevermans also scored twice and Nordin Amrabat opened his scoring account for PSV. He was to face suspension for an alleged elbow on an opponent.
Miscellaneous
Danny Koevermans became a father after his wife Marijke gave birth to their second daughter Isa on 22 August. PSV were handed a tough draw in Group D of the Champions League as they faced the likes of Liverpool, Atlético Madrid and Marseille. Yelmer Buurman, PSV's Superleague Formula driver, was just held off for the final podium spot, but set the fastest lap time in the opening round of the Superleague Formula championship at Donington Park on August 31. On the same day PSV celebrated their 95th anniversary!

A review of the month of September 2008 will be published on Friday, January 9.
