Conceding goals for the first time in the pre-season campaign, PSV were held to a 2-2 draw by RKC Waalwijk in a friendly match on Tuesday night. Brazilian striker Jonathan Reis scored twice after the break as PSV came from behind to rescue a draw against the newly-promoted Eredivisie team.
RKC dominated in the first half
The opening stages were evenly contested, when the home side started to dominate proceedings. Charlison Benschop gave RKC Waalwijk the lead in the 23rd minute after the 19-year old striker had already given the PSV defence, with André Ooijer partnering Maza in the heart of defence, a couple of early scares. PSV failed to clear a cross and the ball fell to Benschop who slotted home; 1-0. PSV then frequently lost possession with sloppy passes. Stef Nijland had a few good runs down the left wing, with RKC goalkeeper Jurgen Wevers hardly called into action. Ten minutes from half time, Benjamin de Ceulaer set up Benschop, who had his effort denied by PSV keeper Cássio Ramos. Yet the visitors doubled their lead two minutes later. Full back Dusty Mulder delivered a long cross from the right and Ruud Berger, getting the better of his marker, curled a shot past Ramos; 2-0. Joe Kendrick, on trial this week with RKC Waalwijk from PFC Neftchi in Azerbaijan, sustained an injury after 28 minutes and the Ulsterman was forced to be substituted.
Afellay comeback, Jonathan double
PSV coach Fred Rutten made nine changes at half time and the hosts also fielded several new players. Ibrahim Afellay made his first start for PSV since his injury nearly two and a half months ago. PSV turned the tables after the break, putting pressure on the RKC defence. The deficit was reduced twenty minutes into the second half, when Jonathan flicked an Afellay cross past keeper Theo Zwarthoed. The Brazilian was again on target in the 72nd minute. He got at the end of a well-worked passing move started by the midfielders Orlando Engelaar, who has joined PSV from Schalke 04, and Afellay. PSV attempted to snatch a late victory, but Engelaar hit the bar and Jonathan as well as Afellay brought out saves from Zwarthoed. At the other end, RKC also had chances but keeper Bas Roorda pulled off a fine save to keep PSV in the game. Final score: 2-2.
