PSV have reached the Champions League quarter finals on a glorious night in Monaco. Guus Hiddink coached his team to a 2-0 win over AS Monaco, last year’s finalists, in the Stade Louis II. "We will try and cause them a lot of problems by scoring an away goal", was the match plan that PSV head coach Guus Hiddink had drawn up. AS Monaco started many moves, but PSV, who netted as many as two goals and kept a blank sheet on the Côte d’Azur, went through to the last eight. Because of these two goals, scored on either side of the break by Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink and DaMarcus Beasley coupled with the 1-0 victory at home in the first leg two weeks ago in Eindhoven, PSV have now joined the elite of Europe. Over 15, 500 spectators, among whom a crowd of singing PSV fans that had made the trip to Monaco, saw how the PSV players put up an impressive display and showed a collective self confidence.Monaco immediately piled up the pressure. The hosts did not concede any space and had only attacking ideas. Kallon and Chevanton threatened, but they were thwarted by PSV keeper Gomes. And then, on 27 minutes, PSV got what they had hoped for: they took the lead and AS Monaco were dealt a severe blow. Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink powered home a header at the near post from a Mark van Bommel corner. The Monegasques realized they now needed three goals to qualify. Ji-Sung Park suddenly entered the box five minutes from half time, but his lob did not surprise Monaco keeper Flavio Roma.Van Bommel, Phillip Cocu and Vogel, who battled for every ball and closed down all the spaces, dominated proceedings in midfield. The PSV captain was booked in the first half, but right back André Ooijer, who would miss the next game if he were booked, did not get in the referee’s notebook. Young-Pyo Lee was shown a yellow card by the English referee Bennett, and in the second period his country fellow Park also went in the book. Hiddink brought on DaMarcus Beasley for Vennegoor of Hesselink on 66 minutes and it turned out to be a golden substitution. The American had been on the pitch for only three minutes, when he was superbly fed by Cocu. Beasley tapped home from close range at the far post; 0-2. The game was virtually over, for the team of coach Didier Deschamps knew they could never make up the deficit any more. Defender Gaël Givet could not hide his frustration and after a bad tackle on Jefferson Farfán he was shown a straight red card fifteen minutes from final time. The Peruvian was immediately taken off and replaced by Robert, who made his European debut for PSV. It was game, set and match for the Eindhoven side who progressed to the UEFA Champions league quarter finals on an historic night!
