The Dutch team took another hurdle in their attempts to qualify for the 2006 World Cup by claiming a 2-0 win over Rumania in the Rotterdam Kuip on Saturday night.Theo Lucius made his debut for the national team; he was included in the starting line-up and played the full 90 minutes.Theo LuciusLucius had been called up for the Dutch squad before, but he had never made an appearance in an official international game for his country. He was not troubled by stage fright and put in a fine performance. Mark van Bommel was also given a place in the starting line-up, but he was taken off five minutes after the break; Nigel de Jong was brought on for him. The three other PSV players in the Dutch squad, Wilfred Bouma, André Ooijer and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, watched the game from the grand stand. AZ defender Barry Obdam and Arsenal forward Robin van Persie, who left the bench to take over from Ruud van Nistelrooy, were also handed their debuts. Van Persie is not likely to forget his first appearance for he wasted a golden opportunity in the second half, with the goal at his mercy. Arjen RobbenJust like in Rumania, the Dutch team enjoyed a 2-0 victory. The game in the Rotterdam Kuip was played in a business-like way. Arjen Robben put Holland on top on 26 minutes. Dirk Kuyt delivered a superb long ball that Cosmin Contra failed to control, after which the former PSV forward clinically finished; 1-0. Soon after the restart Kuyt doubled the advantage by heading the ball home from a Robben free kick; 2-0. By recording a convincing win, the Netherlands kept their position at the top of Group 1.The Czech Republic hammered Andorra 8-1, but Holland still have one more point. Rumania have no chance of qualifying for the World Cup 2006.
