PSV will meet Olympique Lyon in the Peace Cup third group game tonight, when a place in the final is at stake. We cast our mind back for a while to Wednesday night 13 April last. HighlightThree months ago PSV got a great deal of enjoyment on a historical European night. They welcomed Lyon for the Champions League quarter finals second leg in Eindhoven. The two teams drew 1-1, just like in the first leg in Lyon. Lyon took an early lead, but Alex leveled the score soon after the break. No more goals were scored in extra time, either. PSV goalkeeper Gomes was man of the match by stopping two penalties in the penalty shoot out. And another Brazilian, Robert, created the sweetest moment of the season by converting the final spot kick. The Philips Stadium erupted; the Eindhoven crowd went wild with joy, as PSV had reached the semi finals! "It’s amazing and actually incredible, when you compare the situation in August, at the start of the campaign, and tonight”, said Guus Hiddink after the astonishing match at the time.John CarewOlympique Lyon went back to France, bitterly disappointed. It was nice to clinch the French title for the fourth time in a row, but the European elimination felt like a sledgehammer blow. Paul le Guen, who was coach at the time, is no longer with Lyon. Former Liverpool coach Gerard Houllier is now at the helm. And some changes have been brought about in the squad. By the arrival of the Norwegian striker John Carew, Lyon have strengthened their attacking options. But the Brazilian midfielder Juninho (with his trade mark free kicks) will not show his skills in Korea. Lyon will most probably be anxious to take revenge and when the game is kicked off at 19:00, they will have only one thing in mind. PSV will think back to the storm of applause and joy that pervaded the stadium on 13 April. Both teams may have started their pre-season campaign only recently, today’s match is a special one anyway. One goalLyon have collected the same number of points as PSV in the Peace Cup tournament. The French drew 1-1 with Once Caldas, but enjoyed a 2-1 win over Seognam Ilhwa. Lyon have a better goal difference than PSV, as they have scored one more goal than the Eindhoven side. So if the two teams share honours this evening, Lyon will progress to the final. So Guus Hiddink and his squad need a win. The winning team in the other group will not be announced until Thursday. Sundowns from South Africa and Tottenham Hotspur from London, coached by the Dutchman Martin Jol, are joint leaders.
