The Dutch team, who fielded Phillip Cocu as the only PSV player, have virtually ensured qualification for the World Cup 2006 in Germany. They themselves collected a narrow 0-1 win over Armenia while Romania beat the Czech Republic. Ruud van Nistelrooy scored the winning goal after he had been set up by substitute Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink. Vennegoor of HesselinkThe visitors had not been able to threaten the compact, solid Armenian defence for over an hour, when coach Marco van Basten brought on Vennegoor of Hesselink. His very first action was heading back a long ball to Van Nistelrooy who turned and fired home the only goal of the night. The Dutch then were troubled, but they held on and managed to scrape a crucial win.Ruud van Nistelrooy"It was a hard-fought victory; but that’s not an unusual thing in countries like this", announced former PSV striker Ruud van Nistelrooy straight after the game. "I know it won’t serve as an excuse, but games like these are always hard." He was also asked on the assist delivered by Vennegoor of Hesselink: "He headed the ball back perfectly; I found some space to turn and then fire. It was a great moment. We have grabbed three points and we are delighted by the 2-0 win that Rumania enjoyed over the Czech Republic."The Dutch team will now face Andorra in a World Cup 2006 qualifying game in the Eindhoven Philips Stadium on Wednesday night.
