The Dutch team U21 has made football history in Portugal. Coach Foppe de Haan guided his side to a 3-0 win over Ukraine and won the UEFA European Under-21 Championship for the first time. HuntelaarKlaas Jan Huntelaar, who was the leading scorer and star of the prestigious tournament, played a major part in winning the title. The Ajax striker scored two of the three goals in the final. Holland U21 dominated proceedings in the first half, but survived some scary moments as well. Ukraine players hit the woodwork three times and if they fired on target, Dutch goalkeeper Kenneth Vermeer thwarted all their efforts.Holland U21 had taken the lead in 11 minutes, when Hofs played a long ball which Huntelaar controlled beautifully before striking a low shot that went home. On the stroke of half time Holland U21 got an excellent opportunity to double their advantage, after Yatsenko had handled the ball in the box. Huntelaar did not fail to convert the spot kick by sending the Ukraine goalkeeper the wrong way. European championsUkraine stepped up the pace of the game after the interval and pushed the Dutch team back, but Vermeer was in great shape and denied all their efforts. Ukraine were reduced to ten men on 77 minutes, when Romanchuk was sent off for a second bookable offence, a wild tackle on Nicky Hofs. Hofs even superbly made it three in injury time, just before huge celebrations were started.
