PSV head coach Ronald Koeman admitted at the post-match press conference at the McDos Goffert Stadium that he was bitterly disappointed by his team’s performance. “We have failed to win an official game for the sixth successive time and what upset me most is that we were badly organised at some stages of the game”, he complained.
PSV have failed to win an official game for the sixth successive time, after they were knocked out of the Dutch Cup by NAC Breda, drew 1-1 with Arsenal in a Champions League tie, had to settle for a goalless draw with Excelsior, were, again, beaten by NAC in a domestic league tie and suffered an emphatic defeat against Liverpool in the UCL quarter final first leg last Tuesday. “We felt pretty confident when we travelled to Nijmegen. We welcomed back some key players from injury and knew what was at stake tonight. I think we had a decent start, but then gave away the game in the space of two minutes. When they scored the second goal, we felt shattered until fifteen minutes into the second half. N.E.C. have scored two goals, but they could and should have scored as many as six”, concluded Koeman, who had hoped his team would snatch one point in the closing stages. “It would not have been deserved, though. I am bitterly disappointed and upset by our lack of organisation.’ N.E.C. coach Mario Been could hardly conceal feelings of pride, after his side had earned ‘a deserved victory over the ruling champions’. “I am pleasantly surprised by this victory. We do not often pull off such a stunning result. We knew PSV are having a poor spell, so we decided to have a go at them. I can only blame my players for not having killed off the game when we were 2-0 up. We could have made a few more goals after the break, when we got some wonderful opportunities. PSV reduced the deficit and as a coach I felt uncomfortable during the closing stages. But al in all, we fully deserved the win tonight.”
