Some called it a 'sneaky' win and others thought PSV had stolen the victory at the death. PSV coach Dwight Lodeweges begged to differ at the post-match conference. 'I don't think we stole victory. It's true FC Groningen created a hatful of scoring chances, but so did we', said the winning coach who was delighted with his team's victory.
"We were rewarded for our perseverance with a win'
PSV's caretaker coach thought his side had put in a fine first-half display. 'We were the better side in the first half, in control of the game. It must have been a heavy blow for FC Groningen to concede a goal deep into injury time.' Lodeweges made two substitutions as the game entered the closing stages. Nijland delivered the cross and fellow replacement Lazovic headed in the winning goal. 'Our forwards were exhausted so we brought on three fresh players. We knew we would face a difficult task. Last season FC Groningen completely outclassed PSV at the Euroborg Stadium. We were less convincing in the second half but did not change our match plan. We were rewarded for our perseverance with a win.'
Jans: 'Take the positives'
FC Groningen coach Ron Jans thought his team had deserved to win the game. 'We were the better team in the second half and deserved to win. It's too bad we crashed to defeat after all, conceding a goal in injury time. Yet I feel proud of my players who've been working their socks off. We played to win but suffered defeat. PSV were the luckier team and took control in the first half. We improved after the break and played some neat football on a pitch that left something to be desired. In spite of the defeat, I am content: we'll take all the positives from our attacking game as we prepare for next week's clash at leaders AZ.'
