The UEFA (www.uefa.com) always present some interesting information, data and statistics ahead of each Champions League game. We have selected a few items, related to tonight’s quarter-finals return leg between Liverpool and PSV at Anfield, which kicks off at 19:45 local time.
Dirk Kuyt will sit out the second leg through suspension having picked up his third caution of this season’s competition in the first leg in Eindhoven, while Pennant, who is one caution away from a ban, is not likely to start. All English sports writers expect Rafael Benítez to include Boudewijn Zenden in Liverpool’s starting line-up. Robbie Fowler, who celebrated his 32nd birthday two days ago, will probably partner Greg Bellamy up front. Xabi Alonso is the only Liverpool player to have featured in all eleven UEFA Champions League matches to date, including qualifying. Only AC Milan, with 58, have had more shots on goal than Liverpool’s total of 57. With 16 goals in their first nine games, Liverpool are the highest scorers in the competition, together with Bayern München. Only PSV, with 103, have committed fewer fouls than Liverpool’s total of 119. Mohamed Sissoko is available again after his one-match ban. Three PSV players have featured in all nine UEFA Champions League matches: Gomes, Timmy Simons and Edison Mendez. The latter will not make an appearance tonight. Gomes and Simons have played all 810 minutes so far. Patrick Kluivert has currently played 99 matches in UEFA Club competition and will make his 100th appearance, if he is fielded at Anfield tonight. Jefferson Farfán has been flagged offside 17 times. He also committed 27 fouls to date, more than any other player in the tournament. PSV have collected the lowest number of yellow cards of the sides in the quarter-finals, with eight, although they have also received one red card, for Michael Lamey, against Bordeaux in the group stages. PSV have scored eight goals in this season’s competition; no last-eight team has scored fewer. All eight goals scored in the UEFA Champions League this season have come in the second half. Six have been scored in the final 30 minutes. Csaba Fehér, who was booked in the first game, and Carlos Salcido are both one caution away from suspension. If PSV progress to the semi-finals and they are shown a yellow card tonight, they will miss the next match, against Chelsea. <L CODE="C01">www.uefa.com</L>
