Johan Vonlanthen and Johann Vogel have succeeded in securing a spot at the World Cup 2006 in Germany in spite of a 4-2 defeat they suffered against Turkey in Istanbul last night. Thrilling gameHardly one minute was on the clock, when the Turkish hopes were hugely dented, as the Swiss earned a penalty. Defender Alpay Özalan handled the ball in the area, and top scorer Alexander Frei calmly converted the spot kick. As Switzerland had enjoyed a 2-0 win at home in the first qualifying play-off leg, Turkey now needed a 4-1 win in order to progress to the World Cup 2006. They were close to performing that miracle, when they were on 3-1 on top on 55 minutes, thanks to a Tuncay Sanli double and a goal scored by Necati Ates. The latter converted a penalty after Serhat Akin had gone down from a clumsy foul tackle by Marco Streller. Streller himself made amends, though, on 84 minutes. The VfB Stuttgart forward was at the end of a dangerous counter attack, when the Swiss had already wasted a few good opportunities to kill off the game. Turkey refused to give up and just when Streller had been taken off by coach Kuhn, Tuncay headed home his third goal of the night on 89 minutes. Five minutes of playing time added, but the Turks could not score the goal that would have brought so much relief.A survey of all the qualified teams:European zone: Germany, England, France, Italy, Croatia, Netherlands, Ukraine, Poland, Portugal, Serbia and Montenegro, Spain, Czech Republic, Sweden and Switzerland.African zone: Angola, Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, Togo and Tunisia.Asian zone: Iran, Japan, Saudi Arabia and Korea Republic.North, Central and Caribbean zone: Mexico, USA, Costa Rica and Trinidad and Tobago.South American zone: Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador, Paraguay.Oceanian zone: Australia.
