The die is cast: Romário will make a move from the Copacobana to Miami Beach. The 40-year-old former PSV striker will join the brand new professional organization Miami FC, who officially announced the signing of the second leading scorer in world soccer history. Romário de Souza Faria, who was in the service of PSV from 1988 until 1993, where he scored 165 goals in 167 official games, roused emotions in Rio lately. When he did not appear at the training sessions at Vasco da Gama, following a conflict, he was the centre of interest in the headlines and many rumours were started on him. But Romário, who was granted many privileges in order to realize his target of scoring the magical number of one thousand goals in his career, seemed to have vanished from the earth. But there is no obscurity any longer on his near future: Romário is going to ply his trade at the brand new club Miami FC in the United Soccer Leagues Division One. Miami FC will make their US debut in a pre-season friendly on April 16 against current Jamaican and Caribbean Champions, Portmore United. Romário’s move was not quite unexpected. He had been linked with the South Florida franchise for some time yet. Miami FC are proud that Romário will sign a deal, as they reported on their website yesterday. The Brazilian is now able to be on tour in the country where he won his major trophy in 1994, the World Cup. The USL Division One is a league with clubs from the USA, Canada and the Caribbean. The twelve USL clubs are from Portland, Puerto Rico Vancouver and Virginia. 28 fixtures are scheduled for the current campaign. Romário will be joined with 38-year-old World Cup 1994 team mate Zinho. Miami will play their first official match on 23 April next. Romário will now be able to focus on completing his mission of scoring one thousand goals. According to unofficial stats, he has taken his tally to 967 goals. All goals he ever netted in his career during official games as well as friendlies have been included. Romário had three spells with Vasco da Gama and made appearances for PSV, FC Barcelona, Flamengo (2x), Valencia, Fluminense (2x) and for All Saad in Qatar. He started his career in 1985 and intends to show his skills now in the Miami Tropical Park Stadium in Miami. Romário will return to the Copacobana in September and he may have netted a landmark one thousand goals by then and he may even have been in Holland to take part in the PSV Otten Cup that is organized for the 60th time, as persistent rumour has it. Time will tell.
