The UEFA Cup tournament moves towards a dénouement. The quarter final second legs were played last night and all favourite teams have progressed to the semi finals. The UEFA Cup final is scheduled in the PSV Stadium for 10 May next. The English side Middlesbrough, with, among other players, Dutch striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink made amends for the 2-0 first leg defeat, away against FC Basel, by staging an incredible fight back. Former FC Twente defender Daniel Majstorovic, who is now in the service of Basel, was sent off on 79 minutes for a second bookable offence. Hasselbaink scored 3-1 in the 78th minute and substitute and Maccarone netted the crucial late gasp fourth goal on 90 minutes. That vital goal took his club into the UEFA Cup semi finals where they will meet Steaua Bucharest, who succeeded in qualifying, following a goalless draw with town fellows Rapid.FC Schalke 04 and the Spanish side Sevilla have also reached the semi finals. Schalke drew 1-1 at home with Levski Sofia. Schalke coach Mirko Slomka had already guided his team to a 1-3 away win in the first quarter final leg. Sevilla also drew their second leg 1-1.The Spanish side did not have to dig deep, following a comfortable 4-1 win at home. The game in St. Petersburg was played under severe circumstances. The semi finals fixtures are scheduled for 20 April and 27 April next.
