Phillip Cocu will retire as an international player from international football after the World Cup 2006 in Germany. The 35-year-old midfielder announced the news at the end of a football talk show on Dutch TV on Monday night.He has played 95 times for his country and is the third most-capped player behind Frank de Boer (112) and Edwin van der Sar (107).Phillip Cocu was handed his debut in the Dutch team on 24 April 1996, when Holland met Germany for a friendly (0-1). The versatile midfielder has been given a place in the starting line up of the Dutch team 90 times and he was brought on as a substitute 5 times. Cocu won 52 of these 95 international games; he drew 15 games and Holland suffered 15 defeats. Phillip Cocu has scored ten goals so far, while wearing an orange shirt. Phillip Cocu occupies the third place in the all-time ranking. If Holland reach the World Cup 2006 final and if Cocu is fielded in all games, the midfielder, born in Eindhoven, will have made 105 international appearances. Goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar may take over the top position from Frank de Boer, who was capped 112 times. Van der Sar has made 107 international appearances so far.
