Holland U21 had a poor start to the Euro 2006 in Portugal. The team, coached by Foppe de Haan, slipped to a 2-1 defeat in their opening game against the Ukraine U21 side. Luirink scored a consolation in injury time. PoorA 9, 000 crowd saw Holland U21 start the game rather sloppily. The players frequently lost possession and up front Klaas Jan Huntelaar never impressed. Five minutes before half time Ukraïne earned a penalty. Dinamo Kiev striker Milevski had been fouled by keeper Kenneth Vermeer (or was it a dive?) and duly converted from the spot in Panenka-like fashion. As many as four players evaded the offside trap in the 51st minute before Fomin tapped in from close range. PSV youngster Ismail Aissati had meanwhile been brought on to strengthen the Holland U21 attacking options. Gijs Luirink delivered a header in the third minute of added time that went home, but it was too late to avert defeat. Ibrahim Afellay, who has been ruled out due to an injury, announced: " We didn' t play well, but there will always be games like that when you play a tournament. We must take revenge quickly and put things right."
