The Swiss, including former PSV midfielder Johann Vogel, had put in excellent group stage performances, but they have been eliminated from the World Cup tournament, after Ukraine beat them on penalties last night. As the game ended in a goalless draw, penalties were needed to get a result. Switzerland looked set to make a bright start, when Andrei Sjevtsjenko missed Ukraine’s first penalty in the shoot-out. But Sheva was spared his blushes by his goalkeeper Olexandr Sjovkovsky and three Swiss players. Sjovkovsky saved the first and third spot kick, taken by Marco Streller and Ricardo Cabañas respectively, while Tranquillo Barnetta hit the bar with his effort. Artem Milevski, Sergei Rebrov and Oleg Goesev did not fail and thus Ukraine are through to the quarter finals and will now face Italy.
