Dutch teams achieved good results in their UEFA Cup tournament opening games on Thursday night. They enjoyed three wins, drew once and slipped to one defeat.IK Start-AjaxAjax travelled to IK Start and enjoyed a 5-2 win over the Norwegian club. IK levelled the score twice, after Klaas Jan Huntelaar had given Ajax a 1-0 lead and after Markus Rosenberg had made it 2-1. But Wesley Sneijder virtually wrapped up the game after 63 minutes with a well-struck free kick. Roger and again Huntelaar finished the job. Ajax have a 5-2 lead and will feel that they have one foot in the UEFA Cup group stage.Vitoría Setubal-sc HeerenveenSC Heerenveen will have nothing to fear, either. The Frisian side got off to a great start to their UEFA Cup campaign by earning an emphatic 3-0 win over Vitoria Setubal in Portugal. Heerenveen’s latest signing Afonso Alves from Brazil made a huge impact by scoring a double. Lasse Nilsson put the icing on the cake in the last minute after he had added even a third goal. AZ-KayserisporAZ will face a stern test against Kayserispor in Turkey in two weeks. They beat the Turks 3-2 at home last night. Danny Koevermans converted a penalty in the 7th minute. Bülent Bolukbasi leveled the score, but Rogier Molhoek and Shota Arvaldze gave AZ a two-goal cushion. Just when the hosts thought they had wrapped up the game, Ragip reduced the deficit and the Alkmaar outfit will have to work hard in two weeks’ time to reach the next phase.Lokomotiv Sofia-FeyenoordFeyenoord, who will meet PSV next Sunday in the domestic league, had a bad start to their game against Lokomotiv Sofia. They were trailing 2-0 at half time, but former PSV player Theo Lucius gave Feyenoord hope by converting a penalty. Serginho Greene made it 2-2 on 59 minutes.Partizan Belgrade-FC GroningenFC Groningen were the only Dutch club to suffer defeat, but there is still a spark of hope thanks to a late-gasp goal. FC Groningen slipped to a 4-2 defeat in Belgrade. PSV were beaten 3-2 by town fellows Red Star Belgrade in the 2004-2005 qualification stages, but saw them off 5-0 at home in Eindhoven. And FC Groningen are hard to beat at their own Euroborg stadium.
