By earning their second away win in succession, PSV stand a fair chance of reaching the knock out stages of the Champions League. They continued their unbeaten start by beating Galatasaray 2-1 in Istanbul, thanks to second half goals scored by Kromkamp and Koné.Seven pointsPSV earned most points in their two previous Champions League campaigns in the familiar Philips Stadium, but this season they have done very well on foreign soil. Ronald Koeman’s team saw off Bordeaux 1-0 before and tonight they grabbed all three points in Istanbul. It is a great achievement and PSV seem to be well on course for a third successive qualification to the next phase. Never before did they succeed in pulling off a win in Turkey, but tonight they enjoyed a deserved victory. PSV had to come back from a goal down and owe goal scorer Arouna Koné and keeper Gomes, who pulled off a string of fine saves. PSV are now on top of Group C alongside Liverpool, who also have seven points. The English side beat Bordeaux 1-0 in France. Galatasaray and Bordeaux have collected one point so far. Biting and cold windIt was cold in Istanbul; strong wind gusts kicked up biting and cold winds. PSV turned in a rather poor performance and created little. Galatasaray battled for every inch in order to keep their chances of progressing to the Champions League knock out stages alive and put pressure on the Eindhoven defence. Arda Turan, the young talented midfielder, started many flowing moves. On nineteen minutes the hosts were rewarded for the aggressive way they played football in the Atatürk Olimpiyat. Galatasaray captain Ümit played a fine through ball to Ilic, whose effort took a deflection off Alex before it trickled past Gomes and into the net. Soon afterwards Erik Gerets’ team earned another opportunity, but PSV survived this scary moment. Carlos Salcido had already been booked, when the Russian referee Baskakov showed him an early yellow card for a foul. Orhan and Ayhan were also cautioned in the first period. PSV hardly ever threatened; Mendez and Farfán had their moments, but could not cut into the area. Kromkamp and KonéAfter the break the PSV gradually got a hold over their opponents. On the hour mark right back Jan Kromkamp joined the attack and by firing an effort on target, straight through the legs of goalkeeper Mondragon, he leveled the score; 1-1. The dreadful keeper’s mistake put the game upside down, but PSV gratefully enjoyed this stroke of good luck. With eighteen minutes left Mika Väyrynen, who was outstanding as a substitute, superbly put Koné clear and with just the goalkeeper to beat the Ivory Coast international coolly slotted home. Koné, who was said to lack cutting edge, silenced his critics by scoring this invaluable goal. Gomes also made his mark: he produced a wonderful save in the dying seconds, thus making sure of victory.
