PSV take on NAC Breda, sixth in the Eredivisie rankings, on Wednesday night in a Dutch Cup quarter final tie. It will be a special game for NAC coach Ernie Brandts, who is a former PSV player as well as coach. “I still feel part of the PSV family.”
A visit to Breda soon reveals that his love for PSV is not flagging “My heart will always be to PSV. I spent some great years with them and I would love to return to them once, in whatever function.” Brandts was a first-team player at the end of the seventies of the former century, when PSV lifted the UEFA Cup. He also played games for the Dutch national team at the World Cup 1978 in Argentina. Brandts made a move from PSV to Roda JC in 1986, after which he had spells at MVV, Germinal Ekeren in Belgium and De Graafschap, where he ended his career as a professional player in 1992. Brandts was coach of the PSV reserves and assistant coach of Dick Advocaat, Bobby Robson and Erik Gerets, respectively, in the period 1993- 2002. “I did not like the way in which I parted company with PSV in 2002, but there’s no use looking back. I’d rather look ahead and, on retrospect, I have benefited from the experience”.
Brandts remained tight-lipped about his game plan for tomorrow night. The former PSV player realizes that NAC Breda are the underdogs. “We were beaten 3-0 by PSV earlier this season. PSV were having a great run and we struggled to find our form. But I feel we stand a chance tomorrow night; it could be one of these nights, where we exceed ourselves. Our home fans will always support us fanatically. PSV will not be impressed with the entourage, as they are used to it, but it may prove to be an incentive for our players.”
