The PSV coaching and medical staff will decide tomorrow whether Alex will play on Sunday afternoon, when PSV take on FC Utrecht. The Brazilian resumed full training yesterday after he had recovered from his hamstring injury and also took part in a practise match at training on Friday morning. “That was the next step and he has not suffered a setback”, said coach Ronald Koeman.
“Judging from what I’ve seen at training, he looks fit”, said Koeman in De Herdgang press room. “He's even lost a couple of pounds, probably because of the hot Brazilian climate. He has resumed full training and took part in a practise match at training, but that is obviously different from a fiercely contested game, with so much at stake. But he has passed the next hurdle. We will decide on him on Saturday. If Alex is match-fit, he will start.” Koeman intimated that if he calls up Alex up his eighteen-man squad, he will hand a place to the Brazilian centre-half in his starting eleven, so Alex will not start on the bench.
On Sunday afternoon PSV make the trip to the Galgenwaard Stadium in Utrecht to play FC Utrecht in the penultimate round of the 2006-2007 campaign. “We know how they play, particularly at home. We have to be prepared for that and give it all we've got. FC Utrecht also have something to play for, so the pressure will be on them as well. We have to win all the individual battles and prevent them from having a go at us.”
Koeman was asked whether PSV are interested in Bayern München striker Roy Makaay. “Those rumours have resurfaced again”, explained Koeman. “We would like to strengthen our attacking options, but we have to wait and see. Makaay has once announced that PSV are an option, if ever he returns to Holland. Those players are usually pretty expensive, but if wants to leave or will not be offered a contract extension, who knows?”
