Sunday’s clash with Vitesse was not the main topic at the weekly media briefing at de Herdgang. Media representatives were greatly interested in Ronald Koeman’s future as head coach at PSV, though. Koeman’s response was quite clear: “I won’t step down.”
The past week newspapers and magazines reported stories about Ronald Koeman's future as head coach at PSV as being up in the air. Ronald Koeman explained he found it hard to cope with the rumours that were being spread. “I realise that as a coach I am fully responsible for PSV’s recent poor performances. I can cope with that, as I know it’s part of the job. But all those questions that have been raised about an alleged discord between me and the players of the squad and assistant coach Jan Wouters; they are hard for me to swallow. They are all based on nothing but lies. Some so-called football pundits spread disgraceful rumours each and every week and many reporters keep pace with him. I like my job and I am highly motivated and committed to do it to the best of my ability. Believe me, if I had noticed that there was no chemistry left, I would have stepped down immediately. But it would not be relevant to do so now”, said Koeman, who clearly felt provoked. PSV have imposed a fine against Patrick Kluivert for statements he had made earlier this week. That’s the end of the matter, as far as Ronald Koeman is concerned and he has called-up the striker to his eighteen-man squad for Sunday’s game against Vitesse. “Kluivert’s statements hurt, after I risked my neck to sign him. But he has been fined and that’s it.”\
Ronald Koeman could not answer the question how long he would be in charge as coach at PSV. “The board will decide on that issue, when they review the past season. We still have a chance to clinch the title, although we are dependent on the results of other teams. But if we have failed to win a trophy, I know I will be held responsible for the poor results. Being a coach is a precarious job and I don’t have any problems with that”, concluded Koeman.
