It was nice to see some familiar faces at De Herdgang on Tuesday afternoon. Guus Hiddink paid a surprise visit, while former goalkeeper Hans van Breukelen dropped by for an interview at PSV’s training complex. When head coach Ronald Koeman joined them, it looked like a 1988 team reunion.
Former PSV coach Guus Hiddink, currently in charge of the Russian national team, passed by to catch up on news. Van Breukelen had made an appointment for an interview and it soon brought back fond memories of the good old days. Hiddink led PSV to victory in the European Cup I in Stuttgart in 1988, beating Benfica on penalties after a goalless final. Van Breukelen was named ‘man of the match’ on that historic day when he managed to stop the final penalty kick taken by Velasco, giving the title to PSV. Things are fairly quiet at De Herdgang these days. The players have a day off on Wednesday and train on Thursday and Friday before they take on amateurs VV Acht, who celebrate their 60th anniversary, in a friendly on Saturday. The 2006/07 season may have ended, but most of the pack are away on international duty with their national teams. Russia, coached by Guus Hiddink, will play two group E Euro 2008 qualifying games shortly. They play host to Andorra on June 2 and travel to Croatia on June 6.
