It may have taken a while, but eventually the championship shield has returned to its proper place: in Eindhoven. A KNVB representative handed the authentic championship shield to PSV during an official reception at the Philips Stadium on Wednesday, after the club had had to make do with a replica until yesterday.
The KNVB, the Royal Dutch Football Association, realised that on Sunday 29 April 2007, the final weekend of the season, both PSV, AZ and PSV, in that order, were fighting to win the title, knowing only one would reach climax, the momentum being with Ajax and AZ. That’s why the authentic championship shield was at Stadium Woudestein in Rotterdam, where AZ took on Excelsior, while replica trophies were taken to Tilburg where Willem II met Ajax and Eindhoven where PSV played host to Vitesse. In the end PSV clinched the Eredivisie title on a historic and emotional afternoon. So the KNVB officials were at the Philips Stadium yesterday to congratulate PSV once again and hand the authentic shield to the reigning champions. PSV keep all the championship shields on the fourth floor in the Business Club, but will first show the latest trophy to the public and put it in a prominent place when the annual team photos are taken. The 2005-2006 championship shield occupies a conspicuous place on the wall.
