The US, who had given a place to DaMarcus Beasley in their starting line-up, again lifted the Gold Cup, after enjoying a 2-1 win in the final against rivals Mexico, with PSV defender Carlos Salcido, at Soldier Field in Chicago on Sunday night. The hosts bravely held on in the exciting closing stages. DaMarcus Beasley as well as Carlos Salcido played the entire match.
Mexico took the lead in the magnificent Chicago Bears Stadium on the stroke of half time, when outstanding Castillo delivered a fine cross from the right flank that Guardado blasted home. Team USA leveled the score on the hour mark, when Brian Ching was fouled in the penalty area and Landon Donovan did not fail to convert the resulting spot kick. Benny Feilhaber struck the winning goal in the 73rd minute. The ball was cleared after a corner and the midfielder superbly struck a volley that sailed into the roof of the net.
In the closing stages, the Mexicans moved men forward, stepping up the pressure in a desperate bid to snatch an equaliser. They earned a great chance two minutes from time when the ball somehow fell to Adolfo Bautista, who suddenly found himself in a one-to-one situation with the USA goalkeeper Tim Howard. The Guadalajara striker unleashed a pretty good shot, but Howard pushed his effort away over the bar for a corner. Beasley hit the crossbar in the final minute of official time and so the Team USA claimed the Gold Cup for the second consecutive time. Beasley and Salcido will now go on holiday, after pulling out of the Copa América.
