Argentina met Team USA at the José Encarnación 'Pachencho' Romero Stadium last night in their Copa América Group C opening game. The Americans started the game brightly, but suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat after all.
Team USA, without DaMarcus Beasley, who completed a move from PSV to Glasgow Rangers earlier this week, took the lead after only nine minutes, when Eddie Johnson converted a spot-kick. But their lead proved short-lived, when Hernán Crespo put the tournament’s favourites on level terms. With 63 minutes on the clock, Riquelme set up Crespo, who scored his second goal of the night. Argentina’s substitutes Pablo Aimar and Carlos Tévez scored two more goals in the final ten minutes; 4-1 PSV player Lee Nguyen was not called into action. Paraguay hammered Colombia 5-0 in the other Group C game. Following a rest day on Friday, the Copa América kicks off again on Saturday. Bolivia take on Uruguay, while hosts Venezuela meet Peru.
