Brazil have succeeded in qualifying for the quarter-finals of the Copa América 2007, after beating Ecuador 1-0 last night. Ecuador, who had given a place to PSV midfielder Edison Mendez in their starting line-up, have been knocked out of the tournament after three successive defeats. Robinho scored the only goal of the night for the Canaries after 55 minutes, when he converted a spot-kick. Ecuador knew their chances of booking a place among the last eight were limited, when they took on Brazil in their final Group B game, in front of a 37, 500 crowd. Mexico, who had already ensured qualification to the quarter-finals, drew 0-0 with Chili, a result that suited both teams, as Chili also progress, as the best number three. Brazil will face Chili in a quarter-final clash on Saturday, while Mexico will meet the second placed team of Group C. The will have to wait for the result of tonight’s final Group C match between Paraguay and Argentina to know their next opponents.
