Brazil have clinched the Copa América 2007 title after they coasted to a 3-0 win against rivals Argentina in the final last night. Sunday’s much-anticipated final provided a repeat of the 2004 final, when Brazil lifted the cup after a penalty shootout against Argentina. The Argentinians had been looking forward to take revenge and round off their tournament in style, but Brazil once again proved to be the stronger team.
Only five minutes were on the clock, when Brazil coached by Dunga, who won his first major trophy, opened the scoring. Júlio Baptista unleashed a long-range effort that floated into the top corner. Brazil doubled their advantage on 40 minutes when Daniel Alves broke down the right and whipped in a low cross that Ayala tried to intercept, but he sent the ball beyond his goalkeeper Abbondanzieri, scoring an unfortunate own goal. Daniel Alves put the result beyond doubt after 69 minutes, when he scored from a tight angle. Brazil have now won four of the last five Copa America tournaments, in1997, 1999, 2004 and 2007, and eight in total. <L CODE="C01">Alex Rodrigo Dias da Costa </L>, the former PSV defender who had started in all of Brazil’s games, was dominant at the heart of the defence and took part in the Brazilian celebrations that broke out after the final whistle. Mexico ended third in the Copa América after beating Uruguay 3-1. Andrés Guardado, who was brought on as a substitute, scored the third goal for his country. The midfielder, who recently completed a deal with the Spanish side Deportivo La Coruña, sealed the 3-1 victory after 76 minutes.
