Both PSV head coach Ronald Koeman and his Ajax colleague Henk ten Cate quickly put things in perspective after the game. Both coaches agreed that it had not been a great game of football, but Ajax deserved the win, as they showed more spirit and desire. Koeman in particular thought it had been a scrappy affair that lacked drama.

“Neither team created a lot of chances”, started Koeman his analysis of the game. “We did not start well and frequently lost possession. We played our best football during the second period of the first half, when we headed two good chances wide. We conceded the goal at an inconvenient moment. Rommedahl was given space and the ball fell to Gabri whose finish was clinical. We tried to put pressure on Ajax after the break, but it was actually a scrappy affair. I did not think we would score an equalizer” concluded Koeman.
Henk ten Cate claimed his side deserved to win, although he admitted that Ajax had not put in a sparkling display, either. “We started well and dominated the game during the first 25 minutes. The pace of the game then slowed and PSV started a few counter attacks, but we took the lead. I think we controlled proceedings well in the second half and could have extended the lead to 2-0 or even 3-0, but Gomes pulled off two super saves. We fully deserved to win, but it was not a great game.”
