Olympique Marseille have appointed former PSV coach Erik Gerets as their new manager on a two-year contract. The 53-year-old succeeds Albert Emon, who parted company with the French side following their disappointing start in the French Ligue 1.

As Olympique Marseille won just one of their nine league games this season, President Pepe Diouf decided to dismiss Emon. “The team needs a fresh start and Gerets has the capacities to achieve successes here”, said the Olympique Marseille president.
Gerets joined PSV in the 1985/86 season and won many trophies in his career. After he retired from professional football as a player, he started a coaching career. He was also very successful as a coach, winning four league titles in three countries. He coached Club Luik, Lierse SK and Club Brugge in his native Belgium, before he was appointed head coach at PSV in 1999. After three seasons in Eindhoven, he had spells at the Bundesliga clubs 1.FC Kaiserslautern and VfL Wolfsburg. The past two seasons he was in charge of Galatasaray, where he suffered a double defeat against PSV in the Champions league. He parted company with the Turkish side in May and will now be reunited with, among other players, Boudewijn Zenden at Olympique Marseille.
