Kenneth Perez was the architect of PSV's win in a cup tie over Young Heerenveen at the Abe Lenstra Stadium on Wednesday night. Ronald Koeman's team coasted to a comfortable 3-0 victory, thanks to fine goals from Jonathan on the stroke of half time and Perez and Danny Koevermans after the break.
In-form Kenneth Perez, who had put in outstanding displays against CSKA Moscow and Feyenoord, played well enough again to deserve another man-of-the-match award. The Dane scored his fourth goal in three matches and provided assists for Jonathan and Koevermans. PSV may have scored three fine goals, but the match was a rather uneventful affair, as PSV did not have to dig deep to reach the next round.
PSV head coach Ronald Koeman fielded an attack-minded four-man front line at the Abe Lenstra Stadium. Koevermans and Perez formed the partnership up front, while Jonathan and Farfán played on the right and left flank respectively. Da Costa moved into the heart of defence, where he partnered Salcido. Culina, Addo and Lazovic were all rested.
Afonso Alves produced most danger for the hosts and made his mark twice in the first half. After a tentative opening 20 minutes, the Brazilian striker created the first genuine chance, when he stung the hands of fellow countryman Gomez with a fierce long-range drive. Alves cut into the area five minutes later, but had his effort blocked by Da Costa.
PSV lacked inspiration and struggled to mount any serious attacking threat. They increased the pace of the game in the closing stages of the first half and surged forward, without managing to carve open anything meaningful. Yet they scored the opening goal in the first minute of added time. Koevermans just failed to connect with a clever through pass from Perez, but Jonathan was in the right place to produce a superb lob, scoring his first goal for PSV in an official match; 0-1.
PSV wrapped up things quickly after the interval. Ten minutes after the break Farfán found Perez, who controlled the ball well before unleashing an effort that sailed past former PSV goalkeeper Van Dijk and into the bottom corner; 0-2. Soon afterwards
Koevermans was put clear, by Perez again, and he calmly put the ball into the net; 0-3. Mission accomplished and Koeman immediately took off Salcido for Addo and withdrew Jonathan for Van der Leegte. With twenty minutes remaining, Koeman made his final substitution: Kromkamp was taken off and youngster Dirk Marcellis left the bench to replace him. .PSV were satisfied with the result and the hosts in vain attempted to score a consolation.
