Australia enjoyed a perfect start to their World Cup 2010 campaign. Roared on by 51,000 ecstatic home fans, Pim Verbeek, who made his debut as Australia coach, led his team to an empathic 3-0 victory against Qatar in their first Asian FIFA World Cup qualifying game. PSV midfielder Culina was given a start and played the full 90 minutes. Cahill, Kennedy and Bresciano got their names on the score sheet.

The home side virtually wrapped up victory in the first thirty minutes. Joshua Kennedy, Tim Cahill and Mark Bresciano scored goals to put the result beyond doubt. The Socceroos also dominated proceedings in the second half, but did not score goals any more. 'We played a fantastic first half. We created chances and scored great goals. Moreover we didn't give Qatar a chance to play football,' said Verbeek said afterwards.
