Ghana's dreams of reaching the Africa Cup of Nations final were shattered as The Black Stars, who host the prestigious tournament, slipped to a 1-0 defeat against Cameroon in the semi finals on Thursday night. They will now meet Ivory Coast on Saturday night, with a consolation prize, the third or fourth place, at stake.
Eric Addo had a great chance to put Ghana ahead in the fifth minute, but the PSV defender failed to connect with a well-taken free kick. Ghana were the better side and created most chances, but just when they piled up the pressure, the Indomitable Lions struck from a counter attack in the 71ste minute. Jean Epalle squared the ball back to Samuel Eto'o, who superbly set up Nkong, who, against the run of play, broke the deadlock, dealing Ghana a devastating blow. Ghana surged forward in numbers in the closing stages, but could not stage a comeback in the remaining minutes, and the devoted home fans in the stadium in Accra, who had been ecstatic throughout the tournament, had to reconcile themselves to defeat.
Defending champions Egypt defeated Ivory Coast 4-1 in the other semi-final match and will meet Cameroon in the final on Sunday.
