Sef Vergoossen does not think that the result of Saturday night's clash with sc Heerenveen is of crucial importance in the title race, but realises that PSV face a tough test at home and obviously takes the encounter with the Frisian side very seriously indeed. 'We go into a vital game, taking on one of our closest rivals', said the PSV caretaker coach at the weekly media briefing, prior to the Friday afternoon training session.
As several players have not yet returned from international duty, it was decided to start the Friday training session, which is again behind closed doors, at 15: 00. Vergoossen hopes his players have come through unscathed, while he added that he had not received any worrying news. He explained he never takes things for granted, but refuses to look upon Saturday night's clash with sc Heerenveen as a key game. 'We obviously take our opponents very seriously, but we play 34 league games this season and Saturday's clash is one of them, although I admit that some games are more important than others. We take every game as it comes and hope to get a result, just like we did in our previous home game, when we snatched a late-gasp win.'
Vergoossen worked with a depleted squad this week, but the squad was boosted in numbers with a large youth team contingent. Funso Ojo, Rens van Eijden, Rochdi Achenteh and Stijn Wuytens joined the first-team squad for full training, gaining valuable experience. 'The talented youngsters have done well at training. We have been able to monitor their progress in training and matches. They will not be called up to the first team squad yet, but we are pleased with the commitment they have shown this week.'
