Two former PSV head coaches met in Marseille on Thursday night, when Olympique Marseille with coach Erik Gerets took on Dick Advocaat's FC Zenit. The home side enjoyed a 3-1 win in their UEFA Cup Round of 16 first-leg encounter. Huub Stevens, who will leave Hamburger SV next summer to take charge of PSV, slipped to a 1-0 defeat at Bayer Leverkusen.

Olympique Marseille dominated the game at the Stade Vélodrome and their positive attacking football was rewarded with the opening goal after 37 minutes. Djibril Cissé was put clear by Taye Taiwo and his finish was clinical; 1-0. Marseille piled up the pressure on Zenit and three minutes after the restart, Mamadou Niang doubled Marseille's advantage. The Senegalese international was picked out by Samir Nasri and slotted home from ten yards out. When Cissé had made it 3-0, Marseille, who had brought on Boudewijn Zenden, looked home and dry, but Andrei Arsjavin handed Zenit a lifeline when he scored an away goal, reducing the deficit eight minutes from time.
Bayer Leverkusen en Hamburger SV must overcome a 1-0 deficit against Bayer Leverkusen next week, after they suffered a 1-0 defeat in their UEFA Cup Round of 16 first-leg encounter. Greek international Theofanis Gekas scored the winning goal after 77 minutes. Dutchmen Joris Mathijsen, Rafael van der Vaart and Nigel de Jong all started for Hamburger SV, but the latter will miss next Wednesday night's return through suspension, after he was booked on Thursday night.
