Ibrahim Afellay is a major doubt for tomorrow night's Eredivisie crunch game against Ajax at the Philips Stadium in Eindhoven. The midfielder sustained an ankle injury on Monday and is likely to miss Wednesday's top-of-the-table clash. Yet PSV head coach Sef Vergoossen hopes he will be able to include the Holland international in his starting line. 'Amazing how much can change in 24 hours', Vergoossen told reporters.
'Afellay sustained a freak injury in the sports hall at De Herdgang on Monday afternoon', explained Vergoossen. 'The lads were having a game of dodge ball. When Afellay jumped high to intercept the ball, he made an awkward landing. I did not see the incident, as I had already left the hall.'
Vergoossen does not blame Afellay at all. 'He is not likely to be 100% match fit, but this is a very special game and he may make a speedy recovery after all. Amazing how much can change in 24.'
PSV head coach Sef Vergoossen may stick to the game plan that proved to be successful during the UEFA Cup clash with Tottenham Hotspur. 'We may, but then again, we may not', told Vergoossen reporters at the press briefing on Tuesday afternoon. Danny Koevermans withdrew from the squad for personal reasons on Sunday. The club's leading scores will make a return to the squad, at the expense of the Brazilian Jonathan. Vergoossen has already added Mika Väyrynen to the nineteen-man squad in case Afellay is not fit enough to start.
