Celtic beat Glasgow Rangers 2-1 on Wednesday night to narrow the gap on Rangers to one point. Celtic striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink scored the winning goal with a trademark header in the 93rd minute. His goal reduced Rangers' league lead to one point, but Celtic have played two games more. The tall striker was also fortunate to escape being sent off.

Celtic needed to win the Old Firm in order to keep their dreams of winning the Scottish title alive. They controlled the game, but failed to convert their superiority into goals and when the score was still 1-1, Celtic's top scorer Scott Mc Donald had a penalty saved. Vennegoor of Hesselink was fortunate to escape being sent off after committing a foul in the middle of the pitch. He became the hero of the night, though, when he nodded home the winning goal in the 93rd minute to give Celtic a 2-1 win. Nakamura had opened the scoring in the first half with a stunning unstoppable shot.
