Young PSV won the KNVB Cup for reserve teams on Monday night. After 90 minutes, the score was 1-1 and as no goals were scored during extra time, the match was decided in a penalty shoot out. Young PSV converted two spot kicks, whereas Young N.E.C. missed all five of their penalties, so Young PSV captain Rens van Eijden proudly lifted the KNVB Cup at the end of a thrilling night of action.
PSV got off on a bright start. Género Zeefuik set up Ismail Aissati, who superbly scored the opening goal after ten minutes. The game had been fairly uneventful for long periods, but sparked into life during the closing stages. Six minutes from time, Young N.E.C. were back on level terms and PSV were reduced to ten men one minute later after Brazilian Fagner was shown a straight red card by the referee.
The two teams were engaged in a bruising battle, but as neither side could find the net in extra time, the match was determined in one of the most bizarre penalty shoot outs ever, when nerves were tested to the full. After Olivier ter Horst had converted the first spot kick for PSV, as many as seven players in a row missed their penalties. Cássio Ramos solidly saved two penalties, while two other N.E.C. players hit the post or fired over the bar. N.E.C goalkeeper Rein Baart saved three penalties, before Ismail Aissati finally converted PSV's fifth spot kick. PSV had won The Cup for reserve teams and have booked a place in the KNVB Cup. The Cup was presented to captain Rens van Eijden on the pitch.
