The PSV board of directors announced on Thursday afternoon that midfielder Otman Bakkal has pledged his future to the club by signing a new contract extension that will keep him at the Philips Stadium until 2012. Bakkal, who is away on international duty in Sweden with the Dutch Olympic team, came through the ranks at De Herdgang. He said: 'I am delighted to sign a contract extension on improved terms. I am happy and my confidence has never been higher.'
Bakkal's former deal with PSV was due to expire in 2010. His agent was at the Philips Stadium on Thursday afternoon to finalise the deal. The 23-year-old midfielder had loan spells at FC Den Bosch, FC Eindhoven and FC Twente before he became a first-team regular at PSV. Bakkal scored eight goals in 31 league matches for PSV last season. Eleven years ago, he played in a PSV junior team along with Ibrahim Afellay, who is preparing with the Dutch squad for the Euro 2008. Bakkal will be away on international duty with the Dutch Olympic team at the Beijing 2008 Olympics, before he reports back for training in Eindhoven, with the new head coach Huub Stevens in charge. Bakkal was a player of the Dutch U-21 team who won the European Under-21 championship last year.
