Feyenoord striker Roy Makaay pounced late to earn the Dutch Olympic team a 1-0 victory against Belgium in an international friendly on Wednesday night. Coach Foppe de Haan handed starting places to three PSV players at the Crital Arena in Genk. Makaay scored the winning goal five minutes from time.
Bakkal, Marcellis as well as Pieters
The Dutch team put in a poor first-half display. They did better after the break but failed to create any meaningful chances. The Belgians created a hatful of chances in the first period, but the Belgian team, who have also qualified for the Beijing Olympics, lacked cutting edge. Ajax defender Jan Vertonghen hit the post and AZ striker Moussa Dembélé fired over the bar. Roy Makaay eventually turned out to be the match winner for Holland. Jonathan de Guzman provided a subtle through ball and the Feyenoord striker was on hand to coolly slot the ball past the keeper. Otman Bakkal, Dirk Marcellis and Erik Pieters played the full ninety minutes. Erik Pieters was shown a yellow card.
Hongkong
The Dutch Olympic football team will complete their preparations for the Olympic Football Tournament by taking part in a tournament in Hong Kong. On Saturday, they will travel to Hong Kong, where they will meet Ivory Coast on Wednesday 30 July. Coach Foppe de Haan and his men will then travel to Tianjin, where they play their first two group stage matches. They face Nigeria in the opening game on August 7.
