The draw for the UEFA Champions League group stages took place in Monaco on Thursday night. PSV were drawn with Liverpool and they will also face Olympique Marseille and Atlético Madrid in Group D. PSV have met Liverpool several times before, but they have never taken on Marseille and Madrid.
Group D
Huub Stevens' team faces stern tests in qualifying for the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League, when they play Liverpool, Marseille and Atlético, who all enjoy a great popularity. Liverpool and Madrid qualified for the group stages, following wins on Wednesday over Standard Liege and Schalke 04, respectively. PSV will meet one or two Dutchmen or good old friends in their Champions League Group stage matches Dirk Kuyt and Ryan Babel play for Liverpool. PSV icon Erik Gerets is head coach at Marseille, whose squad includes former PSV player Boudewijn Zenden, and international John Heitinga joined Atlético Madrid in summer.
