The UEFA Referees Committee has announced the referees for the opening eight fixtures of matchday 1 in the 2008/09 UEFA Champions League. The Italian referee Roberto Rosetti will be in charge for Tuesday's Champions League game between PSV and Atlético Madrid. Rosetti has refereed a PSV game before, when the Italian took charge of the quarter final tie between Liverpool and PSV at Anfield. (1-0)
Marcellis red-carded
PSV, who had suffered a 3-0 home defeat against Liverpool before, handed debuts to youngsters Rens van Eijden and Dirk Marcellis in the return leg in England. Marcellis was red-carded after 64 minutes by referee Roberto Rosetti for a tackle on Boudewijn Zenden that was late rather than malicious. The Liverpool faithful did not agree with the referee's decision and as Marcellis left the pitch, they gave the young defender a standing ovation. Rosetti will be assisted at the Philips Stadium by Alessandro Stagnoli and Sandro Rossomando. Stagnoli was also the referee's assistant in Liverpool on 11 April 2007. Tomorrow night's game kicks off at 20:45 CET. PSV train on the pitch of the Philips Stadium on Monday morning at 11am, followed by a pre-match press conference.
