Tonight's opponents Atlético Madrid have never met PSV before. The Eindhoven team has a good record against Spanish opposition. They have faced Spanish visitors ten times previously, recording four wins, five draws and one defeat. FC Barcelona are the only Spanish side to have won at the Philips Stadium, claiming a 3-2 win in the 1995/96 UCL campaign.
PSV take part for the thirteenth time
PSV are taking part in the Champions League for the 12th consecutive time. Last season, they enjoyed two victories against CSKA, drew with Fenerbahçe at home and suffered three defeats, against Inter at home and away and on their travels to Fenerbahçe. Porto and Manchester United have qualified for the Champions League group stages for a record fourteen times, while PSV enter the prestigious tournament for the thirteenth time. Referee Roberto Rosetti will be in charge for tonight's game. The 40-old Italian took charge of the quarter final tie between Liverpool and PSV at Anfield on 11 April 2007, when he sent off debutant Dirk Marcellis.
Atlético return after an absence of eleven years
Atlético return to Europe's élite club competition after an absence of eleven years. The Spanish club last competed in the UEFA Champions League in 1996/97, when they lost out to Ajax in the quarter-finals. Atlético have lost all four two-legged ties they have contested with Dutch clubs. The PSV match will be Atlético's 50th game in the European Cup 1 and Champions League. Atlético coach Javier Aguirre will be without defender Mariano Pernía and midfielder Maxi Rodríguez who are both suspended.
