Atlético Madrid comfortably coasted to an emphatic 4-0 victory against Recreativo. Florent Sinama-Pongolle bagged a brace for the Rojiblancos. Liverpool were held to a goalless draw by Stoke City at Anfield. PSV's third Champions League opponent Olympique Marseille play host to AS Monaco tonight.
Agüero scored opener
Atlético took on early lead, when Sergio Agüero, who netted a double against PSV on Thursday, coolly headed home a Simão free kick after seven minutes. Maniche doubled Atlético's lead seven minutes into the second half. The ball hit the bar and the prolific scorer was first to pounce on the rebound. Sinama-Pongolle ended the rout with a double in the final fifteen minutes against his former club. Miguel de las Cuevas set him up after 77 minutes and eleven minutes he was on hand again to finish a well-worked move. Atlético have earned six points from their three opening games, while Recreativo still have three points.
Liverpool-Stoke City 0-0
Liverpool could not break the deadlock against well-organised newly promoted Stoke City. The Reds fielded quality strikers Robbie Keane, Dirk Kuijt and Fernando Torres but failed to create any meaningful chances and Ryan Babel, who came on after 64 minutes could not make the difference either. Liverpool came close on two occasions. Steven Gerrard had the ball in the back of the net after only two minutes, but had his goal controversially ruled out as Kuijt was allegedly in an offside position. And two minutes from time Andy Griffin produced a goal-line clearance with Torres lurking. Liverpool have eleven points from five games. Olympique Marseille will play host to AS Monaco tonight.
