PSV coach Huub Stevens admitted at the post-match press conference that things had gone wrong for his team at Anfield after a few minutes' play. 'When we went behind so soon, we knew it would get tough against Liverpool who are in great shape and can play direct passes very well.'
'This is the reality of football', said Stevens in the Trophy room at Anfield, analysing his team 3-1 defeat at mighty Liverpool. 'We were punished for making mistakes that are not acceptable at this level. I am disappointed as some players did not carry out duties that had been agreed upon. While we were enjoying possession of the ball, we were dispossessed and those are errors that should not have been made.' Stevens claimed PSV played the kind of football that fits his team. 'We were wary of Liverpool's threat, but they were by far the better team tonight', he admitted. PSV's head coach also took positives from the game. 'We passed the ball around quite decently at times. But we soon had a mountain to climb.'
PSV will fly back to Eindhoven on Thursday morning. The medical staff will then be able to assess the nature of the injuries that some players have sustained. Stijn Wuytens suffers a knee problem; Edison Méndez appeared to suffer a recurrence of his old upper leg injury and Danny Koevermans was complaining of a hamstring problem. PSV will be next in action on Saturday when they play host to De Graafschap.
